It works! No question. There is no better or faster way to make credits.
If you are ever in a pinch, try the cloner:

You need to have two planets in the same sector both with citadels. Get
the second planet of the two ready for upgrading. It doesn't matter if
it is going from 1 to 2 or 2 to 3 or 3 to 4, but get everything there
you need to upgrade it, but DO NOT upgrade it. Put all the money you
have in the citadel on this second planet. Now leave this planet and
land on the first planet in the same sector. All it has to have is a
citadel, it does not need to be ready for upgrade. Go to the citadel on
the first planet and do a corporate or personal planet scan. This is
done from the citadel by either "X" then "L" or "C" then "Y". Then
before doing anything else at all UPGRADE the first planet (even though
it is not ready for upgrade). You will then see the money from the
second planet cloned over to the first-doubling your money! Now take
this money from the first planet onto your ship and move it to the
second planets' citadel. Do not upgrade the second planet. Just put the
money over there. Now repeat the process. Go back to the first planet
and do a corporate or personal planet scan from the citadel and
immediately try upgrading the frist planet and the credis double again.

In a pinch you can make 11,000,000,000 credits in a matter of minutes
without using any turns. This works if done right all the time. The
ultimate bug to use against all those evil cheating bug users.
